Principal Investigator

U-Xuan Tan received the B.Eng. and Ph.D. degrees from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, in 2005 and 2010, respectively. From 2009 to 2011, he was a Post-Doctoral Fellow at University of Maryland, College Park, MD, USA. From 2012-2014, he was a Lecturer at Singapore University of Technology and Design, Singapore. In 2014, he decided to take up a more research intensive role and is since an Assistant Professor with Pillar of Engineering Product Development at Singapore University of Technology and Design, Singapore. In addition to his research interest in mechatronics systems, he places high priority in innovating pedagogy methodology like inter-disciplinary learning.

Research interests: Mechatronics, medical robotics, sensing, control, mechanism design, disturbance compensation, and creating environment for inter-disciplinary learning.

Post-Doctoral Research Fellow

Liangjing Yang is an SUTD-MIT postdoctoral fellow in his second year, currently working in Mechatronics Research Laboratory, MIT. In 2014, he received the D.Eng. degree from the Graduate School of Engineering, University of Tokyo, Japan. He received the M.Eng. and B.Eng. degree from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, National University of Singapore in 2011 and 2008, respectively. He is presently working on the development of a robot-assisted micromanipulation system designed for easy deployment and operation. In the past, he worked on image-guided surgical techniques and medical robots.

Research interests: Computer vision, image processing, and robotics.

Do Tri Nhut (Richard) received the B. S. and M. S. degrees from Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam, in 2002 and 2005, respectively, and the Ph. D. degree from University of Ulsan, Ulsan, Republic of Korea in 2013. He was post-doctoral researcher at Multimedia University, Cyberjaya, Malaysia in 2014. He is currently post-doctoral researcher with Pillar of Engineering Product Development, Singapore University of Technology and Design, Singapore.

Research interests: infrastructureless in-door localization, attitude estimation, vision-based robotic navigation system and control.

Research Assistant

Hsieh-Yu Li has been a robotic research assistant in Robotic and Innovation Laboratory, Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) in Singapore since 2015. He received the M.Eng. and B.Eng. degree from the Department of System and Naval Mechatronic Engineering, National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Taiwan, in 2013 and 2010, respectively. During his time in NCKU, he worked on motion control and automation integration as a student researcher and as a teaching assistant. In 2012, he was a visiting exchange student studying passive walking robot in Department of Automation, Tsinghua University, China. In 2013, he visited Robotics and Intelligent Laboratory, working on the improvement of nonlinear controller for a rehabilitation manipulator, in School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore as an exchange student.

Research interests: Hybrid Force & Motion control, Medical and Rehabilitation manipulator, Robotic & mechatronic integration (sensing & vision), Nonlinear adaptive controller design, Robotics programming (Path Planning & Human-Machine Interface), Robotic dynamic analysis.

ishara

Ishara Paranawithana is a Research Assistant working in Engineering Product Development Pillar at Singapore University of Technology and Design. He received his bachelor’s degree in Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering from University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka in 2016. Currently he is working on the development of an image-guided robot-assisted micromanipulation system for easy deployment and operation. Furthermore he is involved in developing an ultrasound-guided visual servoing system to remove involuntary movement of the surgeon and the patient during kidney stone removal surgery. In his undergraduate days, he has developed a steady state visually evoked potential based brain computer interface to assist patients who are unable to verbally communicate due to paralysis.

Research interests: Biomedical signal and image processing, computer vision guided surgical robotics, brain computer interfaces and assistive technology.

Teguh Santoso Lembono is a Research Assistant in Singapore University of Technology and Design in Robotics and Innovation Lab. He obtained his B. Eng in Mechanical Engineering from Nanyang Technology University in 2012, and M. Eng in Mechanical Engineering from National University of Singapore in 2016.

Research interests: robot dynamics and control, sensor processing, machine learning, optimization, and computational engineering

PhD / Masters Student

Yunfeng Fan is a PhD student at the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD). He received his bachelor’s degree in automation from University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC) where he gained experiences working on autonomous vehicles, UAV control and computer vision.

Research interests: adaptive optimal control, estimator design, disturbance rejection, sensor fusion, high-precision tracking, SLAM, UAV.

Yichang He is an incoming PhD Candidate who is currently working at SUTD Robotics and Innovation Laboratory. He received his B.Eng. degree from Engineering Product Development pillar, Singapore University of Technology and Design in 2015. He will be starting the Ph.D. program in SUTD in Jan, 2017. He is currently working on a multi-DOF micromanipulation sensing system which is able to facilitate operation and training in micromanipulation, and further increase surgeons’ lifespan.

Research interests: Robotics, automation and control, sensor fusion, artificial neural network.

Dexter Chew is a Masters student at Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD). He currently works with the International Design Centre and Robotics and Innovation Laboratory at SUTD. He received his B.Eng. degree from Engineering Product Development pillar at SUTD in 2015 and a Master’s degree in Advanced Manufacturing and Design Innovation at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 2016.

Research interests: Robotics, automation and control, sensor fusion, artificial neural network.

Visiting Researchers

achala

Achala Athukorala  is an undergraduate at University of Moratuwa-Sri Lanka, specializing in Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering. Currently, he is working as a research intern at Singapore University of Technology and Design under the supervision of Professor Tan U-Xuan.

Research interests: Embedded device design, electronic circuit design, robotics and automation, power electronics, processor design and computer architecture.

Sebaratnam Alex Xavier is an undergraduate at the department of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering, University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka, currently an intern at Singapore University of Technology and Design under Professor Tan U-Xuan.

Research interests: Biomedical engineering, signal processing, control systems.

Zhuoqi Cheng is currently a PhD student in the Biomedical Robotics group, part of IIT’s Advanced Robotics Department, since Nov, 2014. My PhD project is to develop a hand-held device for delicate surgical operations. Before joining IIT, He was a research assistance working with Prof. Tan U-Xuan and Prof. Foong Shaohui at the Singapore University of Technology and Design, Singapore, where he worked on a project of designing compliant mechanisms with prescribed stiffness. He received his B.S. degree in Mechatronics from Nanjing University of Science and Technology, China and the Ms. c degree in Mechanical Engineering from National University of Singapore, Singapore.
