Science Mentorship Program

Bryan, Tze Yang and Young Loon from Ruffles Institute worked in our group over six months this year. Below is a note from them after their SMP (Science Mentorship Program) experience.

It was an eye-opening experience to be exposed into the field of engineering, especially into microfluidics. We learnt so much about various scientific/engineering concepts, such as fluid dynamics, material science, etc., finding out about the many applications microfluidics are used for and how it impacts our world. Through the experience we gained a new perspective on engineering.

We are thankful for the opportunity to access the lab, comprising of so many different cool equipment, ranging from the cutting plotter to the corona discharge. Our most memorable moments in the SMP experience would have to be the times when we were trying out new things/methods in the lab, whether it was using various methods to seal the PDMS layer to the inlet/outlet opening or trying out different designs on the cameo, having a lot of fun in the process.

Professor Hashimoto is an amazing mentor. His invaluable guidance and support let us learn and grow so much, not just in terms of our scientific knowledge, but also in terms of proper techniques and conduct in scientific research. Through the process, we have also grown so much in terms of our character as well. Professor Hashimoto is a mentor who is very kind and caring towards his students, and always has high priority towards his students’ learning.

Our SMP journey with Professor Hashimoto was a very meaningful and amazing learning experience, one that we will never forget.

Thank you, Bryan, Tze Yang and Young Loon. All the best!
