MY WORK & PROGRESS in 2013
First half of my Year 2013 has been in MIT, continuing from last year on my visiting faculty position at MIT. Some of the work I did so far include (in reverse-chronological order):

Interaction Design Workshop, Malaysia (15 November)
I ran a 1-day workshop on interaction design, at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. Titled Design and Evaluation for Interactivity: Ensuring High Quality Interaction Design, I gave 3 hour lecture in the morning followed by an interesting design activity where participants sketched novel applications and the interaction strategies for different interaction platforms. Organised by Naz and myself, this workshop provided practical and theoretical knowledge and the link between knowledge and application to the participants.

Presenting at IASDR 2013, Tokyo (26-30 August)
I presented a paper at the 5th International Congress of International Association of Societies of Design Research, held in Japan.

Panel at the ID&HCI Workshop, Cyprus (4-5 June)
I was invited as a panel in a round-table discussion on the trends and predictions on user experience, at the 2nd Interaction Design and Human Computer Interaction Workshop, at the University of Nicosia, Cyprus.

Yang's visit to MIT (17 - 24 May)
My colleague and Ph.D student from Dublin, Ireland visited me for a week to discuss her work and sketch the user-interfaces for lifelog data visualisation. During her visit, we visited MIT Media Lab's Camera Culture Group and she presented her work and got useful feedback from the group.

Receiving the Friends of PJC Award (18 May)
I have been collaborating with Pioneer Junior College since last year regarding a student research project on lifelogging application. PJC had its College Day in May where I was awarded 'Friends of PJC' Award in recognition for my mentorship for the PJC's students.

Attending Don Norman's talk (10 May)
Don Norman, a world-renowned researcher famous for developing the principles of design, visited MIT and gave a talk on Friday afternoon... I've read a few of his books (Design of Everyday Things, Emotional Design, and Design of Future Things) and papers, but had never actually met him before. It was good to hear him summarising his design principles with recent examples.

Presenting a poster at MIT Media Lab's Spring 2013 Member Meeting (23 April)
With my Camera Culture Group colleagues, I presented a poster on our collaboration on lifelog data visualisation to the visitors at the Spring 2013 Member Meeting at the Media Lab.

Attending Edward Tufte's 1-day workshop (26 March)
I attended this 1-day workshop run by Edward Tufte, considered one of the most important information visualisation researchers today and whose books have been my all-time source of inspiration which I have been looking at since 1999. I got his autograph in the book, but more importantly, had an opportunity to see his lecture on information visualisation.

Giving a talk at Camera Culture Group, MIT Media Lab (21 February)
I visited the Camera Culture Group at MIT Media Lab to engage in a quite exploratory collaborative work on using my lifelog data and the group's advanced computation techniques.

Visiting Olin College, Massachusetts (20 February)
Along with 5 SUTD colleagues in MIT, I visited Olin College to see its innovative teaching in action. Running the entire programmes in project-based, active learning style, there are things we can learn in SUTD.

Working at the MIT Hobby Shop (February - May)
With my SUTD colleagues, I spent Friday mornings to make an wooden puzzle. Really cool thing about this wooden puzzle is the wooden container with SUTD-MIT logo and the small magnets to gracefully keep the lid shut... it took more time to make this container than the puzzle itself. See the photo I took in April below, at a near-completion stage:

Attending IDC Summit, Singapore (16-18 January)
I had a couple of white papers submitted for this January's International Design Centre Summit. The 3-day event provided ample ideas on Design Research and many of the SUTD-MIT projects currently going on and also planned.
