We are looking for Postdoctoral Fellows (PhD level) and Research Assistants (M.S. and B.S. level) who would like to work on research in digital fabrication using 3D fluid dispensers to fabricate soft, fluidic materials for various applications.

Scope of the Research: We aim to develop methods to fabricate 3D flexible constructs containing fluidic materials using tools of digital fabricaiton. Those constructs should serve as basic units/modules offering unique funcitonalities. The tasks of the researcher are:

  1. Developing methods and/or instruments for digital fabrication (with focus on digital fluidic dispenser) that allow to create structures consisting of various materials, including fluids. The structure should be 3D, flexible, and containing fluidic channels  so it can offer unique functionalities.
  2. Designing new microstructures embedded in soft materials (i.e. elastomeric, hydrogels, glanular etc) and understanding their mesoscopic/bulk properties that leads to unique characteristics (anisotropy and gradient of properties, etc).
  3. Fabricating components of soft robots capable of functioning in unique ways (i.e. actuating, sensing, moving) by applying methods and materials developed in 1 and/or 2.

We will adapt any interdisciplinary approaches to achieve these goals. The researcher will work in an interdisciplinary research team consisiting of electrical, chemical and biomedical engineers, chemists and materials scientists. Qualification, Skills, Experiences:

  • PhD (Postdoc), M.S. or B.S. (Research Assistant) in related fields in chemistry, chemical and biomedical engineering, materials sciences or a related field
  • Experiences in digital fabrication (3D printing, laser cutting, fluid dispensing)
  • Experimental microfluidics, microfabrication
  • Experiences in handling elastomers for fabrication of micro/millimeter size materials
  • CAD, and 3D drawing and modeling
  • Experiences in device fabrication (fluidic, electronic, mechanical) will be considered plus.
  • Good track record of scientific publications

Postdoctoral researcher positions available in the field of Digital fabrication and Soft Robotics.

Description:

Development of soft-adaptive robots and their components using digital fabrication technologies. The task of the researcher is (1) developing methods and fabricating components of soft robots capable of functioning in unique ways (i.e. actuating, sensing, moving), (2) designing new microstructures embedded in soft materials (i.e. elastomeric, hydrogels, glanular etc) and understanding their mesoscopic/bulk properties that leads to unique functionalities, and (3) applying methods of digital fabrications to construct unique 3D structures for the same goal. Our group initially focuses on the use of microfluidic technologies to achieve those goals, and will also adapt any interdisciplinary approaches. The researcher will work in an interdisciplinary research team consisting of electrical, chemical and biomedical engineers, chemists and materials scientists.

Qualification, Skills, Experiences:

  • Ph.D. in chemistry, mechanical, chemical and biomedical engineering, materials sciences or a related field
  • Digital fabrication, CAD, and 3D drawing and modeling
  • Experiences in handling elastomers for fabrication of micro/millimeter size materials
  • Digital fabrication, CAD, and 3D drawing and modeling
  • Experiences in device fabrication (fluidic, electronic, mechanical) will be considered plus.
  • Good track record of scientific publications


Fully funded PhD Scholarships are available (January 2017 Intake and subsequent semesters).
We are looking for highly motivated students interested in the following two fields.

  • Microfluidics: development of novel microfluidic platform/methods and their applications in essential fields of bioengineering: (1) biomaterials synthesis, (2) drug delivery, and (3) point-of-care diagnostics.
  • Digital fabrication: application of digital fabrication technologies (3D printing, digital dispensing, CNC milling and more) for fabrication of structuring containing soft/elastomers and  hydrogels and other functional liquids. Applications include: (1) soft robotics, (2) bioprinting and (3) wearable BioMEMS.
